EQ Win Green Apple Award for work with RG Group

Green Apple WinnerEQ’s work with RG Group has won a Green Apple Environment Award in the international campaign to find the greenest companies, councils and communities.

We competed against more than 200 other nominations in the Green Apple Awards for the Built Environment & Architectural Heritage, and will be presented with our trophy and certificate at a glittering presentation ceremony in Empire Casino, London, on June 29.

As a result of this Green Apple Award success, we have been invited to apply for the top global honour of a Green World Award and have our winning paper published in The Green Book (the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice) so that others around the world can follow the example and learn from the achievement.

We could also progress to represent the UK in the European Business Awards for the Environment.

The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the major recognition for environmental endeavour among companies, councils, communities and countries.

The awards are organised by The Green Organisation – an international, independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.

The Green Apple Awards are supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.

Holidays, Enjoyment and Sustainability – the triple bottom line I like!

Lanzarote YurtsI recently spent time at a holiday destination that is also an ecological development in Lanzarote and wanted to share the experience.  I visited Lanzarote Retreats and stayed in a Mongolian Yurt, the set up is absolutely fantastic and I can’t begin to tell you what it does to the soul to shower outside in the sunshine with a palm tree gently wafting to one side, or experience fresh eggs in a morning picked from the on site hens then, at the end of the day, be lulled to sleep by the natural sound of the sea.  The site is off grid, does its best to recycle as much as possible and minimise energy usage – Yes you can have a holiday and still be sustainable.

Lanzarote was a beautiful unspoilt island with a wild beauty waiting to be discovered.  There was lots to see and do for people of all ages.  I personally love cycling and the island is just perfect for that with little road traffic and the motorist giving cyclists plenty of room.  The island is also great for hiking, unspoilt beaches, art and culture, fabulous restaurants and a bit of wine tasting!

The owner of the development says it perfectly in her recent article The Benefits of an Eco Holiday:-

“At Lanzarote Retreats, ‘Finca de Arrieta’ we pride ourselves on our green credentials, being totally ‘off-grid’ relying on the wind and sun, recycling our water, providing organic produce and numerous other initiatives to ensure we have no negative impact on our environment. When our guests want to leave our retreat, comprising luxurious Mongolian yurts and traditional stone villas, to explore this beautifully unspoilt region of Lanzarote, we even provide them with the latest hybrid electric cars.

However holidays are a very precious time, they are the one time in a year that families can spoil themselves, therefore if ever there was justified time to be self-indulgent and worry less about environment then you could argue this is it. For this reason we see ‘going eco’ as just one aspect of escaping the ‘rat-race’ and the pressures of life. Nurturing and getting closer to the natural environment is good for the mind, but then so is relaxing in lavish surroundings and luxury accommodation.

As providers of ‘eco’ holidays and properties we cannot force our green credentials on people and expect them to choose our locations on that basis alone. We must be more creative and focus on initiatives that add to the guests experience, helping them to truly unwind, sit back and feel totally invigorated by the experience of our natural surroundings. By achieving this we are doing for more to empower people to care about this planet than merely preaching about the importance of sustainability!”
